This is simply one means of controlling when the radio un-mutes its received audio. With a normal FM transceiver, the received audio is muted until a signal is detected with sufficient strength to be intelligible. In order to prevent amateur radio repeaters being unnecessarily activated, there is always an access method required. Initially a simple tone burst was used at the beginning of every transmission made by stations trying to access the repeater. Nowadays, the use of CTCSS tones is almost universally used to access amateur radio repeaters. CTCSS (PL) Tones Frequencies Metropolitan Coordination Association, Inc. CTCSS stands for Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System, it is the generic abbreviation and is used to minimize co-channel interference. CTCSS uses a sub-audible tone transmitted on the signal of the transmitter trying to access the repeater.
A CTCSS tone is a Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System, something brought over to the hobby from PMR. Basically what happens is a sub audible tone is superimposed on your transmission and the repeater recognises this and opens or re-transmits your signal without the need of the 1750kHz tone. CTCSS stands for Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System. Interference-Elimination Codes, sometimes refer to Tone Squelch, TalkGroup or Privacy Code. It works like Key and Lock on Door. Walkie Talkie transmits sub-audible tone (Key) and opens the door (Lock) on Receiver. CTCSS (PL) Tones Frequencies Metropolitan Coordination Association, Inc. On this page you will find the CTSS meaning, what CTSS stands for, and possibly some other relevant information. In telecommunications, squelch is a circuit function that acts to suppress the audio (or video) output of a receiver in the absence of a strong input signal. Essentially, squelch is a specialized type of noise gate designed to suppress weak signals.

If you have your radio tuned to 146.840 Mhz, (the repeater's output frequency), when you push the mic button, your radio automatically transmits on 146.240 Mhz, 600kHz down from 146.840. When you release the mic button to listen, your radio switches back to 146.840 mHz to listen on the repeater's output frequency.
