‘AIDOL’ continues his on-going 'Sinofuturist' cinematic universe, which posits the creative theory that China's technological rise is an emergent form of Artificial Intelligence. As in Lawrence Lek’s previous film Geomancer from 2017, the plot is of secondary importance, merely providing a trail for ideas to follow. The camera is on Diva in this futuristic, partly recognisable – jungle, temples, stadium – and partly abstract, alternative universe. In his first exhibition at Sadie Coles HQ, Lawrence Lek presents AIDOL, a new feature-length film. Featuring a score written and orchestrated by the artist, this computer-generated fantasy tells the story of a fading superstar, Diva, who enlists an aspiring AI songwriter to mount a comeback performance at the 2065 eSports Olympic finale.

But perhaps that’s only fair for Lek. Lawrence Lek's "AIDOL" tells the story of an AI composer making music in a world rendered in video game graphics.
